Introduction to Land Management: Seed Harvesting & Intro to Prescribed Fire

Description: All members of the public including students, land owners, and anyone interested in learning responsible land management practices are invited to join us for our new Introduction to Land Management program.
This six-class series will be held the 4th Saturday of the month, May through October. Class will be held 8:00 a.m. to noon each day, rain or shine.
This six-class series is designed to provide members of the public the basic knowledge and skills required to create and maintain a healthy environment in a Midwestern natural areas setting. The series will provide extensive hands-on experiences facilitated by natural resource professionals in the ares of invasive and noxious weed control, brush management, timber stand improvement, seed harvesting, and the application of prescribed fire. Students will gain holistic and working knowledge of the tools and philosophies employed by the regional leaders at Pottwattamie County Conservation to mange county- and privately-owned lands including the safe operation of power tools (e.g. chainsaws and brush cutters), responsible herbicide application, working with the timing and rhythms of the land, prescribed fire ecology and theory, and the Natural Areas Management Program's "Guiding Principals".
Cost: $15.00 per Session or $75.00 for Six Sessions. Registration is available online.

Area seniors are invited to join us for a special presentation on Iowa's natural wonder, the Loess Hills. Bring your lunch and learn more about what makes this region so special.
This program will be held Tuesday, September 26th from 11:00 a.m. to noon at Hitchcock Nature Center. Our gift shop, exhibit gallery & observation deck will be open before and after this program so make sure and allow extra time to explore all we have to offer at Hitchcock Nature Center. The OWLS - Older, Wiser Learning Seniors, is a new partnership with The Center in Council Bluffs & is designed for senior learners with an interest in environmental science and conservation topics. Programs are presented by PCCB Naturalists and are held at the Center in Council Bluffs or at the Loess Hills Lodge at Hitchcock Nature Center. We ask that participants be age 50 & over. Attendees will either need to purchase a $2.00 per vehicle daily entrance pass or have a valid Pottawattamie County Parks annual permit. Daily passes may be purchased with cash or check at the front entrance on the day of the event. Annual permits may be purchased for $10.00 from staff at any of our parks or at the Loess Hills Lodge at Hitchcock Nature Center during regular business hours. Homeschool students and parents are invited to join us at Hitchcock Nature Center for a fun filled field day.
This event will feature a combination of self-guided activities such as scavenger hunts & nature challenges, along with activities guided by Pottawattamie County Conservation Naturalists. Join in the fun as we hike, explore, & learn then meet up afterwards for refreshments and a chance to network & meet other homeschooling families. This event is perfect for homeschool students age 5 & up with a focus on elementary age learners & will feature lots of hands-on learning.

Join experienced birders Nic Salick, Jason Andersen, and Michelle Biodrowski for a beginning birding class on Saturday, September 30th beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Birding 101 will include a classroom and field session and will provide the knowledge and skills for amateur and beginning birders to accurately identify common and notable species found throughout the midwest. Learn to identify song birds and passerines from field marks, song and behavior at Hitchcock Nature Center.
Hitchcock's nearly 1,300 acre park was names Iowa's first "Important Bird Area" by the Audubon Society and features Loess Hills woodland, oak savanna, and open prairie settings providing a broad range of habitats that support a diverse avian population.
This program can accommodate people of all experience levels but is intended for beginning birders with limited or no field experience. Attendees should plan to bring binoculars or scopes to use in class. Please note the field portion of this program will involve pedestrian travel over Loess Hills terrain which may be difficult at times.
