Our gift shop, exhibit gallery & observation deck will be open before and after this program so make sure and allow extra time to explore all we have to offer at Hitchcock Nature Center. The OWLS - Older, Wiser Learning Seniors, is a new partnership with The Center in Council Bluffs & is designed for senior learners with an interest in environmental science and conservation topics. Programs are presented by PCCB Naturalists and are held at the Center in Council Bluffs or at the Loess Hills Lodge at Hitchcock Nature Center. We ask that participants be age 50 & over. Attendees will either need to purchase a $2.00 per vehicle daily entrance pass or have a valid Pottawattamie County Parks annual permit. Join Pheasants Forever biologist Nic Salick for a bird walk at The Nature Conservancy’s Folsom Point Preserve Wednesday, September 26th at 6:00 PM. The walk should offer some great opportunities to view fall migrants, late fall blooms in the prairie, and explore this beautiful Loess Hills site.
Attendees should note that this walk will occur outdoors in the Loess Hills of western Iowa and will require pedestrian travel over difficult terrain. The outing will occur regardless of the temperatures, and will only be canceled if we experience lightning activity. No bathrooms or formal facilities are on the Preserve, so plan accordingly.
There is no attendance or registration required. The walk will begin from the parking lot that google maps indicates as the address of Folsom Point Preserve. Parking will be along the dirt road, and carpooling is encouraged.

Birding 101 will include a classroom and field session and will provide the knowledge and skills for amateur and beginning birders to accurately identify common and notable species found throughout the Midwest. Learn to identify song birds and passerines from field marks, song and behavior at Hitchcock Nature Center.
Hitchcock's nearly 1,300 acre park was names Iowa's first "Important Bird Area" by the Audubon Society and features Loess Hills woodland, oak savanna, and open prairie settings providing a broad range of habitats that support a diverse avian population.
This program can accommodate people of all experience levels but is intended for beginning birders with limited or no field experience. Attendees should plan to bring binoculars or scopes to use in class. Please note the field portion of this program will involve pedestrian travel over Loess Hills terrain which may be difficult at times.

Join experienced birders Nic Salick, Jason Andersen, and Michelle Biodrowski for a beginning birding class on Saturday, September 30th beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Birding 101 will include a classroom and field session and will provide the knowledge and skills for amateur and beginning birders to accurately identify common and notable species found throughout the Midwest. Learn to identify song birds and passerines from field marks, song and behavior at Hitchcock Nature Center.
Hitchcock's nearly 1,300 acre park was names Iowa's first "Important Bird Area" by the Audubon Society and features Loess Hills woodland, oak savanna, and open prairie settings providing a broad range of habitats that support a diverse avian population.
This program can accommodate people of all experience levels but is intended for beginning birders with limited or no field experience. Attendees should plan to bring binoculars or scopes to use in class. Please note the field portion of this program will involve pedestrian travel over Loess Hills terrain which may be difficult at times.
The fee for this program is $20.00 per person and includes a copy of The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America for participants to keep. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Please use the link above to register online or call 712-545-3283 for more details.
