Plan a weekend getaway to western Iowa's globally unique Loess Hills with a stay at one of these cozy cabins.
Beginning on the northern end of the byway in Plymouth County, the camping cabin at Five Ridge Prairie is perched on a razor ridge overlooking the Big Sioux River. Down the road in Sioux City, the Friends of Stone Park repurposed a 1930s building into a rental cabin at Stone State Park. If you want to explore the Loess Hills State Forest, book a stay at one of several cabins at the nearby Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins & Campground. And in Harrison and Mills counties, enjoy a stay at modern cabins at Willow Lake Recreation Area or Pony Creek Park, two popular fishing spots with new nature centers. Five Ridge Prairie State Preserve
"Beautiful cabin! You have to walk up but they provide you with a propane stove to use. Comfortable amenities and wonderful hiking and sunset views. Did a four-mile hike through Five Ridge all the way to the Stevenson Preserve to the north. Whip-poor-wills and Barred Owls calling at night."
"Wonderful tiny cabin with a loft big enough for one twin mattress. Primitive features, no running water, but everything else makes up for that. Will definitely stay again! Love the view and the trails. The hike up to the cabin is not for the weak." "Beautiful rustic cabin with a few basic amenities. No power or plumbing. No neighbors, minimal traffic noise. Absolutely breathtaking views." Source: Google Maps |
Stone State Park
Stay overnight in one of three camping cabins at Stone State Park, an urban wildlife sanctuary on the edge of Sioux City and the heart of the Loess Hills. Camping cabins contain heating and air conditioning, but do not offer sanitary facilities. The cabins are located near the campground, which contains electric sites, a large youth group campsite and a modern restroom and shower building.
Check out the new camping cabin at Stone State Park! It was repurposed from a building originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The new cabin is available to rent beginning for two-night minimum stays by contacting the park ranger at 712-255-4698. The stone cabin includes Adirondack chairs, a fire pit, and picnic table at Stone State Park. |
